Although cruise lines and resorts offer childcare, I cannot find any offering adult-daycare.
I am a certified music therapist and former senior center director. For years, I was one of two music therapists, along with art and dance therapists, working at an adult day center ten-minutes from my apartment in NYC. Every morning, frail elders were bussed in, or brought in by family members. They enjoyed breakfast, lunch, and a wide variety of activities, keeping them stimulated and happy. For those needing extra help, physical and occupational therapy were offered. A nurse gave out mid-day medications, and attendants helped some with toileting.
The participants made friends, and chose favorite activities ranging from trivia, to sing/dance-a-longs. Family members needing to work, or take care of small children, were very grateful to know their elderly relatives were safe, fed, and entertained for several hours. Some attended the program six days-a-week, others a couple days a week.
Sadly, the center lost funding and closed. Now, there is no adult-day facility nearby.
I direct a group of elderly singer/comedians, The SHOW STOPPERS. A few of my performers are retired professionals. Many never performed in public before joining my program. We perform all over the NYC area, and regularly entertained at adult day-care holiday parties. My husband is 20 years my senior. He was a successful actor and performed with the group.
Since that time, my husband has suffered memory loss and needs an adult-day program. With no facility nearby, I bring helpers to the house: physical, occupational, music, drama, and art therapists keep him stimulated and moving.
I want to go on vacation with my husband, but will need a few hours a day respite, and cannot afford to bring a 24hour attendant. Although cruise lines and resorts offer childcare, I cannot find any offering adult-daycare. For months, I have been calling, emailing and visiting travel/vacation agencies. I joined travel groups on LinkedIn, to no avail.
As the population ages, adult-day services will be needed more and more. Since I cannot find a vacation package offering adult-daycare, I'm considering starting a program myself.
